The formal entry of El Salvador to the Customs Union with Honduras and Guatemala marks a historic step forward for regional integration and economic development among the countries of Northern Central America. The event was announced on December 6 at a ceremony at the newly opened El Amatillo Integrated Border Post (IBP) in El Salvador. This landmark initiative promises to significantly enhance regional trade, attract new investments and nearshoring opportunities. It officially commenced operations on December 7, 2023, and is poised to streamline the flow of goods and people between El Salvador, Honduras, and other regional countries.
The Customs Union and the resultant IBP is the culmination of a joint effort between the governments of El Salvador and Honduras, with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Central American Economic Integration Secretariat (SIECA), the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), the American Chambers of Commerce (AMCHAM) and through the Founders of the HUGE Business and Investment Council, is supported by members of the private sector looking to invest in regional infrastructure throughout region. It aims to simplify border procedures, reduce transit times, and lower logistics costs for businesses operating in the region.
The inauguration of this state-of-the-art facility, modernized with support from the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), will foster stronger ties and facilitate trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the two countries. The Integrated Border Post and others like it in the region will streamline customs and immigration procedures, making trade more convenient and efficient for everyone. The new post will also serve as a hub for collaboration, fostering stronger partnerships and cooperation between governments, businesses, and communities in Northern Central America.

El ingreso formal de El Salvador a la Unión Aduanera con Honduras y Guatemala marca un paso histórico para la integración regional y el desarrollo económico entre los países del Norte de Centroamérica. El evento fue anunciado el 6 de diciembre en una ceremonia en el recién inaugurado Puesto Fronterizo Integrado (IBP) de El Amatillo en El Salvador. Esta iniciativa histórica promete mejorar significativamente el comercio regional, atraer nuevas inversiones y oportunidades de deslocalización. Inició oficialmente operaciones el 7 de diciembre de 2023 y está preparado para agilizar el flujo de bienes y personas entre El Salvador, Honduras y otros países de la región.
La Unión Aduanera y el PBI resultante es la culminación de un esfuerzo conjunto entre los gobiernos de El Salvador y Honduras, con el apoyo del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), la Secretaría de Integración Económica Centroamericana (SIECA), la Agencia de Estados Unidos para Desarrollo Internacional (USAID) y la Corporación del Desafío del Milenio de EE. UU. (MCC), las Cámaras de Comercio Estadounidenses (AMCHAM) y a través de los Fundadores del HUGE Business and Investment Council, además, cuenta con el apoyo de miembros del sector privado que buscan invertir en infraestructura en toda la región. Su objetivo es simplificar los procedimientos fronterizos, los tiempos de tránsito y reducir los costos logísticos para las empresas que operan en la región.
La inauguración de esta instalación de última generación, modernizada con el apoyo de la Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) de Estados Unidos, fomentará vínculos más fuertes y facilitará el comercio, el turismo y el intercambio cultural entre los dos países. El Puesto Fronterizo Integrado y otros similares en la región agilizarán los procedimientos aduaneros y de inmigración, haciendo que el comercio sea más conveniente y eficiente para todos. El nuevo puesto también servirá como un centro de colaboración, fomentando asociaciones y cooperación más sólidas entre gobiernos, empresas y comunidades en el norte de Centroamérica.
